问机经是不是真的有用?答
“机经”的全称应该是“机考经验”,起源于ETS推行的托福/GRE/GMAT在线考试。换句话来说,因为这些标准化考试都有一个题库,凭借中国学生超凡的记忆力和不朽的分享精神,把题库逐渐还原出来了。更有一些机构对ETS的出题机制进行分析和预测,常常“命中”考试题目。早在2000年左右,因为当时GRE题库较小,很多中国学生都考出了接近满分的成绩,一时间美国大学都拒绝了满分GRE申请者的申请,理由是怀疑考试作弊。因此,“机经”就是猜题,猜对了就有用,猜不对的话就当做练习题了,死记硬背机经的话是一种投机行为,也算是某种程度上的作弊。

问托福(雅思)成绩是不是越高越好?答
不尽然。PhD申请主要考量的还是学术潜力,因为PhD的项目是为学术界培养科研人才的,不是为了比较谁的英语更好。理论上来说,过了学校要求的标准线就行。但是PhD申请竞争还是比较激烈的,托福成绩要不低于100,雅思不低于7(单项别低于6.5),就不会成为申请的短板。考虑到奖学金申请和Teaching Assistantship的话,口语成绩也要足够好才行。

问申请PhD是不是一定要GRE成绩?答
一般来说美国的研究生院(包括硕士和PhD)都会要求GRE成绩,商学院会要求GMAT成绩,加拿大也类似。但是其他国家,比如英国的PhD项目,一般不需要GRE/GMAT成绩,只是对于中国学生如果没有取得过英语国家的学位的话,会要求提交雅思或者托福成绩。

问PhD都有奖学金吗?答
由于PhD的学制通常是3-5年,甚至更长,因此你看到的PhD一般都是有奖学金的。一般来说,PhD的奖学金通常都有一定的working load,比如做research assistant或者teaching assistant。除非特别优秀的能拿到fellowship,就不需要贡献自己的时间来做杂事了。当然,自费的PhD也可以做research assistant或者teaching assistant赚点生活费。最后,中国学生还可以拿到留学基金委(CSC)的奖学金。即使是自费读PhD的学生,在PhD的后半段,也会拿到学校老师的RA任务以及院系里一些其他的奖学金,理论上来说没有完全自费读完PhD的。

问什么样的人才能读PhD?答
答案是拿到PhD的admission (或者全奖offer)的人就可以读PhD。当然,能拿到PhD录取的人一定是有一定的学术背景,比如优秀的学业成绩与研究经历,也有一定的研究兴趣与研究潜力的人。所以年龄不是问题,身高不是问题,只是你申不到奖学金的话,可能要具备一定的经济实力才行了。
